Flâneur y fotógrafo, Eugène Atget (1857-1927) estaba obsesionado con pasear la ciudad. Después de probar suerte con la pintura y la interpretación, se decidió por la fotografía y se trasladó a París desde Libourne, su localidad natal. Realizó estudios para pintores, arquitectos y escenógrafos, pero quedó cautivado por lo que calificó como “documentos” de la ciudad y sus alrededores. En sus escenas, que raramente incluían a personas, mostró predilección por la arquitectura, los paisajes y los artefactos que dan forma al escenario social y cultural.

Atget no fue particularmente conocido en vida, pero durante la década de 1920 y gracias a Man Ray llamó la atención de la vanguardia dadaísta y surrealista. Cuatro de sus imágenes, con su particular fusión de mímesis y misterio, aparecieron publicadas en la revista surrealista La Révolution Surréaliste, al tiempo que Ray y otros miembros de su círculo artístico compraban fotografías suyas. Su fama creció después de su muerte, cuando se le dedicaron varios artículos y una monografía firmada por Berenice Abbott. The singular urban portrait of Eugène Atget

Flâneur and photographer, Eugène Atget (1857-1927) was obsessed with walking around the city. After trying his hand at painting and acting, he decided on photography and moved to Paris from his native Libourne. He studied for painters, architects and stage designers, but was captivated by what he called "documents" of the city and its surroundings. In his scenes, which rarely included people, he showed a predilection for architecture, landscapes, and artifacts that shape the social and cultural scene.

Atget was not particularly well known during his lifetime, but during the 1990s 1920 and thanks to Man Ray he caught the attention of the Dadaist and Surrealist avant-garde. Four of his images, with their particular fusion of mimesis and mystery, were published in the surrealist magazine La Révolution Surréaliste, while Ray and other members of his artistic circle bought photographs of him. His fame grew after his death, when several articles and a monograph signed by Berenice Abbott were dedicated to him. Photographers such as Walker Evans and Bill Brandt have since acknowledged their debt to Atget.

This new work from TASCHEN brings together some 500 photographs from Atget's archives in tribute to his formidable talent for photography urban landscapes and evoke a Paris that has already disappeared. Walking through avenues and alleys, stopping at churches and shops, through courtyards and arcades scattered throughout the 20 districts of Paris, we come across a unique portrait of the city and the birth of a master of modern photography.
