David Nicholls nació en 1966 en la ciudad inglesa de Hampshire. Tras estudiar literatura inglesa y teatro en la Universidad de Bristol, inició una brillante carrera como guionista para la BBC. En 2003 escribió su primera novela, Starter for ten, que adaptó él mismo para la gran pantalla.
