"Deutsch rapid" is intended primarily for the autonomous learner, taking him from absolute beginner to sound basic competence in 15 units averaging 6 pages each - hence the justifiable "rapid" in the title. The course adopts a communicative approach, reflected in the headings for the units ("Kennen Sie unsere Familie; Guten Appetit!; Nach dem Urlaub ..."), and grammar is offered only in context, with simple explanations. The informal, conversational register used in the book and on tape set a relaxed tone for the lessons, leading to greater enjoyment and a speedy acquistion of the language. English is used to present new structures and exercises initially, but is used more sparingly as the course progresses and the learner gains in confidence.
