The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien's world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.Included in the book are several shorter works. The Ainulindale is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabeth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings. This pivotal work features the revised, corrected text and includes, by way of an introduction, a fascinating letter written by Tolkien in 1951 in which he gives a full explanation of how he conceived the early Ages of Middle-earth.

if you are fan of Tolkien works the most well know Lord of the Rings, and if you have read already LoTR and want to go further serious reader, I would suggest take the leap of faith and try the Silmarillion.
The Silmarillion is a complex reading, very unlike Lord of the Rings (LotR) , but tales a myth of creation of the world and some celestial beings that shape the initial world the way tells about the the very first races how the blessed realm of Aman, etc.
Indeed this lecture is complex, the index of names given at the back of the book, became to me a constant checking upon the new introduced characters.
One important thing to remember is that Tolkien had a love for the languages, and initially he aim to create this world to give a homage a civilization where the languages would live... having says that, Tolkien was a professor and philologist, he knew his business, therefore, within the Tolkien extensive lore of Middle-earth there are several inventions of languages, among them the most well know are Quenya and Sindar, also there are quite more languages created that live within Middle-earth, like the Dwarfs languages..
The professor Tolkien experience the influence of many other myths around the age of Europe based on many different cultures as such the Nordics, the Celts, and Finnish...
At the end, the professor combined all these things along, and gave birth to Middle-earth based on languages and myths, as a result, you might understand why along the readers the Silmarillion is considered a complex reading.
