La buena conciencia es la segunda novela de Carlos Fuentes. El escenario es Guanajuato, una capital de provincia en el centro de México, que alguna vez fue uno de los centros mineros más ricos del mundo. La familia Ceballos ha sido restituida al poder, y el adolescente Jaime Ceballos, su único heredero, se debate entre la realidad práctica de su vida familiar y el idealismo de su juventud y su educación católica.
